Lilium candidum, the Madonna lily, is a plant in the true lily family. It is native to the Balkans and Middle East, and naturalized in other parts of Europe, including France, Italy, and Ukraine, and in North Africa, the Canary Islands, Mexico, and other regions.

Meaning: During the Middle Ages the Madonna lily was associated with the Virgin Mary as a symbol of purity; it is often included in paintings of her.

Symbolism: Madonna Lily has been a symbol of the virgin Mary although the white lilium candidum was to become her particular flower, symbolizing purity of soul and chastity.
